The debut single from SC based guitar band Art Star, ‘Max’s Earnest Muse’ starts out seemingly nostalgic, skillfully blending a 90's teen drama soundtrack soundalike chord progression with heartfelt indie harmonies, only to find itself dissolving into a what feels like a fever dream. Couple the ear-worm riffs, courtesy of the fine-tuned (and equally haphazard) fretwork of guitarists Southwell and Suthers with vocalist Mia Mendez's focused and amelodic mantras that straddle a space somewhere between a soft, sweet coo and exasperated shouting and you've got something unassumingly unique.
lyrics
Surreal, so real
Leonora’s in Mexico
Surreal, so real
An artist in incognito
Surreal, so real
I counted every strand of hair
Surreal, so real
I licked the brush between each stroke
A hopelessness
Spelled out by
Incisions inflicted by
A bad, bad boredom
Surreal, so real
Jack, be nimble. Jack, be quick.
Surreal, so real
He said, “I want to be an insect”
Surreal, so real
Fixated on the mother fig
Surreal, so real
Surreal, so real
A hopelessness
Spelled out by
Incisions, inflicted by
A bad, bad boredom
Oh, Leonora
Leonora
Leonora’s got her self portrait
